Shaka Zulu and Two Dumb Cowboys
Sometimes it is just important to be headed in the right direction. In 1996,1 was with WWE in South Africa on a wrestling tour.
Barry Windham and I decided to go to where they had filmed Shaka Zulu. We rented a car and asked directions. The problem was our English.
We started driving, and driving, and driving. We soon realized that we had not seen any tourists for a long time. In fact, we had not seen any white people for a long time. In fact, the black people were either really good character actors, or else we were in Zulu tribal land.
We were in Zulu tribal land.
When we finally made sense of the map, we realized we were deep into Zulu land, and the tribe was not known to be too peaceful at the time. We didn’t have much chance of fitting in, either.
We followed the map in the direction we thought we were told to go and realized that we had gone not to a TV set but to an actual Zulu village—perhaps Shaka’s actual home, I don’t know. It looked like something out of a Tarzan movie, except no popcorn.
Soon our car was surrounded. We got out, with our cowboy hats on, to incredulous looks. I can just imagine they were just as shocked to see us as we were. The people were very nice, even showed us one of their dances that was going on. The problem was, it was getting dark, and to be quite honest I didn’t know what or who was for dinner.
After the main guy, we met the chief. After the tribe members tried on our hats, we finally convinced them to let us leave. We needed a plan. We decided that if we had a flat tire at this time of night, we were just going to keep driving.
I didn’t say it was a good plan, but you have to start somewhere.
The farther we got from the village, the more confidence we attained. It is usually that way when you are getting yourself out of trouble. Needless to say, we did make it back. What a joy it was when we finally realized we were headed in the right direction and that we were going to make it.
